The Government has announced its decision on the future structure of local government in Gloucestershire.
Following a review of local government arrangements, it has been confirmed that a single unitary council will be created for Gloucestershire. The new authority will replace the existing county, city, district and borough councils from 1 April 2028.
According to the Government, the single unitary model was chosen because it best met the assessment criteria. It said the new structure would provide a clear geography for economic growth and housing, make it easier to deliver joined-up public services, and create a strong platform for community empowerment.
The announcement follows a period of consultation on proposals for local government reorganisation in Gloucestershire.
Timeline
The transition to the new structure will take place over the coming years:
- 21 March 2025 – Gloucestershire councils submitted an interim proposal for local government reorganisation.
- 28 November 2025 – Full proposals were submitted to the Government for consideration.
- December 2025 – July 2026 – The Government reviewed the proposals and carried out its assessment.
- 1 April 2028 – The new single unitary council is expected to come into effect, replacing the existing county, city, district and borough councils.
