This summer marks a very special milestone for us. Eighty years ago, in 1946, Lilian Faithfull saw a need and chose to act.

In the years following the Second World War, many older people in Gloucestershire were struggling. Support was limited, communities were rebuilding, and too many people were being overlooked. Lilian’s response was simple and resolute. As she famously said, “Something must be done.”

So, she did something.

Eighty years on, her belief in care built on kindness, dignity and respect still shapes everything we do. Today, Lilian Faithfull Care continues to support older people and their families across Cheltenham and beyond, helping our homes feel just that little bit more like home.

Our beginnings in post-war Cheltenham

Cheltenham in 1946 was a town finding its feet again. The war had left its mark. Food rationing continued, families were adjusting to new realities, and communities were rebuilding together.

Lilian Faithfull knew Cheltenham well. As Vice-Principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, she had spent her life in education and public service. She also saw, first-hand, the gap in care and support for older people.

Her answer was not grand or complicated. It was rooted in humanity. She believed older people deserved safety, companionship and purpose. From this belief, our charity was born, offering care and community to those who needed it most.

Our first homes were modest, but the values were clear from the start: treat people with warmth, listen to them, and help them live well.

Growing alongside Cheltenham

As Cheltenham changed, so did we. The town grew into a centre for culture, learning and innovation. New institutions arrived, festivals flourished, and generations came and went. Throughout this, Lilian Faithfull Care continued to grow in response to local need.

In 1974, we opened St Faith’s, our first nursing home, which has supported residents and families for more than 50 years. Over time, we expanded our services to include residential care, nursing care, dementia support and day services, always with the same person-centred approach.

We did not grow for growth’s sake. We grew because families trusted us and because the need was there.

How care has changed and how we have changed with it

Care today looks very different to care in 1946. In the early years, older people were often cared for in large institutions, with little focus on individuality or independence. Over time, understanding improved. The NHS was founded. Rehabilitation, community care and later dementia care developed. People began to live longer, with more complex needs.

We adapted alongside these changes.

Today, care at Lilian Faithfull Care is about the whole person. It is about routine and reassurance, but also joy, connection and choice. It is about recognising life stories, supporting independence where possible, and providing specialist care where needed.

We remain a not-for-profit charity because our purpose matters. Every decision we make is guided by what is right for the people we support, not by shareholders or profit margins.

Why families continue to trust us

For 80 years, families in Gloucestershire have trusted us with something incredibly important: the care of someone they love.

That trust has been built slowly, day by day, through consistency, honesty and compassion. It shows in the relationships our teams build, the way we welcome families into our homes, and the small moments that make a difference, from a familiar face to a shared laugh.

During challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, our teams showed extraordinary commitment. They adapted, protected residents, supported families and continued to provide care with dignity and kindness.

Care, trust and community remain at the heart of everything we do. This is Lilian’s legacy, lived out every day.

Looking ahead

The world continues to change, but our promise remains the same. We will continue to provide care that is kind, respectful and rooted in community. We will continue to listen to families, support our teams and create places where older people feel safe, valued and at home.
