For years, La Boulangerie has enjoyed a rare privilege, a cult-like demand that usually outstrips supply.
With two Cheltenham locations and a fiercely loyal following, the French artisan bakery has built its reputation the old-fashioned way, flawless bread, exquisite pastries, and uncompromising technique. The result? A near-mythical status. If you weren’t there early, you probably went home empty-handed.
Until now.
Bitter Lemon Creative has designed and launched a new website for La Boulangerie that brings the same precision, craft and restraint found behind the counter into the digital experience, while opening up entirely new revenue opportunities for the business.

The challenge was simple to describe and difficult to solve. La Boulangerie’s products are handcrafted days in advance, in limited quantities, across multiple locations, with no possibility of restocking on the day. Selling them online had to work within those constraints, without disappointing customers.
The answer lay in thoughtful design and intelligent technology.
Working closely with the La Boulangerie team, Bitter Lemon Creative developed a fully custom, seamless online ordering system that allows customers to pre-order breads and pastries with confidence. Customers choose their collection date, time and location. Stock availability updates in real time. When items sell out, the site suggests the best alternative, quietly, helpfully, and without friction. The experience feels effortless. The engineering behind it is anything but.

Beyond e-commerce, the new platform modernises La Boulangerie’s digital presence and supports future growth, from promoting in-person workshops to building a direct relationship with customers through the Journal and newsletter.
“Finally, our customers can pre-order their breads and pastries online and be sure of getting exactly what they want,” says Raoul, owner of La Boulangerie. “It was about time we made that possible, while keeping the same quality that makes La Boulangerie special.”
“Bitter Lemon just got it. Great ideas, smart tech, and loads of energy. They made something complex feel simple, and the site’s already changing how we do business.”

David Drakeley, Founder and CEO of Bitter Lemon Creative, adds:
“La Boulangerie is a legendary – if you haven’t tasted their Almond Croissant you are seriously missing out. With that kind of cult status comes a slight sense of jeopardy, if you aren’t there early, everything might already be gone. For some customers, that uncertainty probably stopped them making the trip at all but, if La Boulangerie knew those customers were definitely coming, they could be ready with additional stock without fear of wastage.
Pre-ordering removes that friction. But it had to be done properly. This wasn’t about bolting e-commerce onto a bakery. It was about designing a system that respects the craft, manages complexity behind the scenes, and gives customers complete confidence at the checkout. The result is a platform built not just to sell, but to grow.”
The project is a clear example of how intelligent digital design can transform a traditional artisan business, preserving its authenticity while extending its reach. The new La Boulangerie website is live now, offering online ordering, newsletter sign-ups, and a calm, elegant way to secure Cheltenham’s most sought-after breads and pastries, without the early-morning gamble.
